CNC stands for Computerized Numerical Control. CNC machine tools process workpieces automatically following pre-edited machining programs. Machining routes, technical parameters, tool paths, displacement values, cutting parameters including spindle speed, feed rate and cutting depth, as well as auxiliary functions like tool change, spindle forward and reverse rotation, cutting fluid switch are compiled into machining sheets in compliance with standard instruction codes and formats. The data is stored on control media such as punched tapes, magnetic tapes, disks and bubble memories, then imported into the CNC device to drive machining operations.
The whole process ranging from part drawing analysis to control media production is defined as CNC programming. Unlike conventional machine tools operated manually, CNC equipment works automatically by preset programs. Different workpieces can be processed simply by replacing control programs, making CNC machines ideal for small-batch production of intricate, high-precision parts.
Since machining relies on programmed instructions, programmers compile and input programs into the CNC unit via control media to operate the machine.
